After an education in mathematics, a 17 year career in manufacturing engineering and a 22 year career in software engineering, he has started a career as an author. Richard writes novels about people trying to find their life-partner, soul-mate, the person they are meant to be with for life. His first two books, Meant to Be and The Couples, are available on his website and most online retailers.
Richard’s other interests range from mathematical analysis and photography to anything with an engine. His current projects include writing the third (Finding Each Other) and fourth novels in the “Meant to Be” series, and discovering the properties of functions of p-adic numbers. Having completed a potting bench for his lifepartner, Carolynn, he is busy driving her to watch salmon runs, visit National Parks, and anywhere that provides an opportunity to view her avian friends.
Acclaimed author of Meant to Be, Richard Alan, once again enchants us with characters that we really want to know. You will laugh, cry, and love with them as you seek the answers to the relationship questions posed by this talented author.
Will a tough techy lady be able to find love with a man who is still mourning his deceased fiancée?
Will an intellectually snobbish genius learn that there is more to the truck mechanic than meets the eye?
Can a nerd and a party girl find happiness together?
Can a teenage boy musician get past his unrequited love to learn to love a ranch girl instead?
Will a troubled rape victim be able to have a normal relationship with a man?
The Couples is about people who may belong together and how the world around them helps them, or sometimes defeats them in their search for a life partner. It follows the lives of couples, their friends, and their support systems,as they explore their relationships.
The Couples is Richard Alan’s second novel in the “Meant to Be” series. It continues to explore relationships, love, and life.
Interview with Richard Alan
Q: Thank you so much for this interview, Richard! Can you tell us where you are from?
I was born in a small town in Iowa along the Mississippi River. After third grade we moved to Chicago’s North Shore. I now live near the foothills of the Cascade Mountains in the Pacific Northwest.
Q: How did you come up with the title?
The Couples is the second book in the “Meant to Be” series.” I write fiction about people striving to find their life partner. The Couples was a logical title for a book about people developing relationships that evolve from being individuals, to couples, and then to families.
Q: They say you can judge a book by its cover. Can you tell us a little about your cover and who designed it?
My wife, Carolynn designed the cover. It depicts a collage of pictures of loving couples together. It meshes perfectly with the theme of the novel.
Q: Can you tell us something about your book that would make me run out and buy it?
It’s a feel good book about people you will like. The characters become family to those who have read the book. It will keep you smiling and wanting more.
Q: Are there any messages in this book that you want the reader to know about?
There is a soul-mate for everyone; however not everyone finds their soul-mate. We spend our lives searching for the person we are meant to be with for the rest of our lives.
Q: What was your most favorite chapter to write and why?
There is a chapter in which two teenagers helped deliver a foal. I particularly enjoyed the research about delivering foals and the feedback from people who had actually delivered foals. It is a very moving scene where the characters are shown to have a huge sense of accomplishment.
Q: Why did you feel you had to write this book?
I probably could have kept writing the first book, but it would have become the book that never ends. I stopped at a logical point, but I had so much more to tell about the people I had created. They live in me and they had more stories to share.
Q: Now, some fun questions – What deep dark secret would you like to share with us?
In second and third grade I had a girlfriend named Nancy. We were inseparable. From the library to movies to exploring parks near our home, which overlooked the Mississippi River, to bike rides and long walks, climbing trees and raiding gardens and fruit trees, we were a team. I’ve often wondered what happened to her and wonder what would have happened to the relationship if I had stayed in the town we lived in.
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
I’d like to sail the Windward Islands in the Caribbean. It is supposed to be some of the most beautiful sailing in the world.
Q: Are you a morning person or a night person?
I am a morning person. I get up early, exercise, have breakfast and then start writing.
Q: Are there any members in your family who also like to write?
One of our boys likes to write short stories. Another has written some screenplays.
Q: As a child, were you a dreamer?
Q: Last but not least, the magic genie has granted you one wish. What would that be?
I want to live a long, healthy life as a successful writer, along with my partner, Carolynn, surrounded by our three sons, their wives and our grandchildren.
Q: Thank you so much for this interview! Do you have any final words?
Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak with you. I hope you and your fans enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. Happy reading!
