The Story Behind Super Luke Faces His Bully by Dr. Jackie Cogswell
The Story Behind the Book is Literarily Speaking’s newest feature. Here we find out either the inspiration behind authors’ books or how they got published. Today’s guest is Dr. Jackie Cogswell, author of Super Luke Faces His Bully.
My writing career began over seven years ago. Nobody was more shocked than I was at the thought of me writing a book. I say this because prior to that time, I felt my imagination was seriously challenged. This made creative writing extremely difficult and I would look for any excuse to avoid coming up with stories for my children. In fact, having a root canal seemed more desirable to me than the thought of creative writing. How could one woman who so seriously disliked writing suddenly be transformed into someone who is now passionate about writing Christian children’s novels?
You may think, “Only God could have changed this woman so significantly that what was once her weakness had suddenly become her strength and passion?” If you thought that, you are absolutely correct!
Something amazing happened to me seven years ago when I first started studying the Bible. At that time, God somehow seemed to have “flipped a switch” in my imagination and starting lighting up my head with Word pictures, or “visual slices” of stories which had deep Biblical meaning. These Word pictures were creative, funny, and easy to understand. They would light up my imagination at any time of the day or night. For instance, when my kids would struggle with common issues like bad attitudes, bullying, fear, and anger, Word pictures would pop into my head which related to relevant Biblical passages. For a while, whenever my daughter opened her mouth, my mind would light up with a Word picture which I would capture and then write down, so that I would not forget it. My daughter was annoyed by this! After a while, these thoughts and Word pictures would connect and Giggleheart Adventures were born.
Giggleheart #1, A Heart Ready To Fly! was about a young girl, Sophia Giggleheart, who had a serious attitude problem. She learned that she was responsible for her own attitude and that it could be changed by repenting and giving her heart to Christ. When she did this, her heart was finally able to giggle with God’s joy, hence the name Giggleheart Adventures.
The seeds to write Giggleheart #2, Super Luke Faces His Bully! were planted in my heart by my son, who was bullied in early elementary school! These seeds grew and took root as my family witnessed how God transformed some of my son’s most hurtful experiences into victories! Through prayer and bringing the bullies’ parents to the table, we were able to witness some incredible heart changes that only God could accomplish. These experiences were so extraordinary that these seeds grew and Super Luke Faces His Bully! was birthed by God’s grace. One of the most unique features about this story is that the topic of tackling bullying from a Christian perspective is deep, but it was written in a fun and relatable way for children of all ages.
As you can see, God and my children inspire me to write. One of the most gratifying aspects of writing for me is that God rewards my heart with His joy when I am immersed in writing one of the Giggleheart Adventures.
Thank you for this opportunity to share my story behind the Giggleheart stories!
