Q: Thank you so much for this interview, Lisa! Can you tell us where you are from?
I’m from Southern California.
Q: How did you come up with your title?
The book is about how fast food is not the enemy many portray it to be. I thought that FAST FOOD VINDICATION was fitting and sort of a play on the book FAST FOOD NATION.
Q: They say you can judge a book by its cover. Can you tell us a little about your cover and who designed it?
I absolutely adore my cover! It was designed by the very talented Dana Morshead of Fishbrain, a Los Angeles-based graphic design studio. It really tells the story of what my book does; uncover the truths about the fast food industry and how we can incorporate its food into a healthy lifestyle.
Q: Can you tell us something about your book that would make me run out and buy it?
Well, we all eat, so right there that’s enough to buy it. Taking that further, the majority of us eat at one time or another at fast food restaurants and we certainly are aware of them. In addition, two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese and growing. My book covers these topics and more.
Q: Are there any messages in this book that you want the reader to know about?
The message is that we can make healthy eating choices wherever we eat, from fast food to fine dining, to our homes, to vending machines, entertainment venues and more. We can also make less healthy choices. It’s within our power to make the better choices.
Q: What was your most favorite chapter to write and why?
I really like the first chapter because it sets everything up for the rest of the book. It’s entertaining and informative.
Q: Why did you feel you had to write this book?
I see thousands of patients every year and so many of them are looking for healthy eating tips. I want to help them and others with that. Also, the laser focus on fast food being the cause of the obesity epidemic isn’t really the true picture. In order to take control of our health, we need the complete picture.
Q: Now, some fun questions – What deep dark secret would you like to share with us?
I love to sing. It makes me happy. I’m an avid Karaoke singer and have a whole system in home, including surround sound and recording capability!
Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
My husband and I both love to travel and we’ve been lucky enough to have seen much of the world, although there’s so much more to see. We just got back from India and soon are off to China, where we’ve already been, but are visiting cities there new to us. I find people, other cultures and customs fascinating and, of course, I love to try different foods.
Q: Are you a morning person or a night person?
I’m mostly a morning person. That comes with the territory when you have two dogs!
Q: Are there any members in your family who also like to write?
My husband, Roy Johansen, is a novelist and screenwriter. He has won an Edgar Award and is a New York Times bestselling author. My mother-in-law is Iris Johansen, also a New York Times bestselling author. I aspire to be them!
Q: As a child, were you a dreamer?
Once and always.
Q: Last but not least, the magic genie has granted you one wish. What would that be?
If my book can impact even just one person to take the “whole picture” approach and learn to eat healthy for life, I’ll be happy.
Q: Thank you so much for this interview! Do you have any final words?
I appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. I’ve enjoyed it!
