Three Sisters and Showstoppers by Helen Smith

Three Sisters and Showstoppers are two novella-length stories in the Emily Castles mystery series. The first full-length novel, Invitation to Die, will be published by Thomas & Mercer in October 2013.

The Emily Castles mystery series is set in present-day London. It features twenty-six-year-old Londoner Emily Castles and her neighbor, eccentric philosophy professor Dr. Muriel Crowther. In Three Sisters, Emily goes to a party in a big house at the end of her street. She’s sure she witnesses a murder, but no one will believe her. She teams up with Dr. Muriel to investigate.

In Showstoppers, Emily helps out at a local stage school run by her neighbor, Victoria. Soon she’s mixed up in a blackmail plot and two deaths. Emily and Dr. Muriel team up to prevent further a massacre live on stage during the end of term show.

Q: Thank you so much for this interview, Helen. Can you tell us where you are from?

Hello, thanks for inviting me here. I’m from London, England.

Q: How did you come up with your title?

Three Sisters is taken from the title of a Chekov play that a character mentions during a crazy party that Emily goes to in a big house at the end of her street. Showstoppers is the name of the local stage school run by Emily’s neighbour Victoria, where most of the action in the story takes place.

Q: They say you can judge a book by its cover.  Can you tell us a little about your cover and who designed it?

The cover for Three Sisters shows Emily’s dog, Jessie, who has just died. I used a photo of my dog, Jessie. If that sounds a bit sad, both my dog and Emily’s fictional version had lived long and happily and died quietly of old age. The cover for Showstoppers is a pair of sparkly red shoes because one of the main characters, Victoria, dresses as Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz for a tap dance routine in the end-of-term show at the stage school she runs. I designed the covers. When the first full-length book in the series, Invitation to Die, is published later in the year, these novellas will have new covers to match that book.

Q: Can you tell us something about your books that would make me run out and buy them?

They’re fun British mysteries that will make you smile as you read them.

Q: Are there any messages in this book that you want the reader to know about?

These are light-hearted books without any special message. But Emily’s adventures begin when she goes out and meets her neighbors. So if readers haven’t met theirs yet, perhaps it will prompt them to do it… unless they don’t want to get mixed up in murder, in which case it may prompt them to ignore all invitations to mysterious parties and stay indoors!

Q: Why did you feel you had to write this book?

I wanted to write a fun British mystery series set in present-day London but featuring strong, interesting female characters. There’s nothing else quite like The Emily Castles Mystery Series, so I thought I had better write it.

Q:  Now, some fun questions – What deep dark secret would you like to share with us?

I have a slanket.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’d like to travel to Brazil. I have never been there and it’s such a vast, vibrant, beautiful country it’s sure to offer plenty of adventure if I can make enough time to explore as much of it as I can.

Q: Are you a morning person or a night person?

I like to work while it’s light. It gets dark in London at around 5.00 pm at the moment because it’s winter, so I need to get up and start work as soon as I can to make the most of it.

Q: Are there any members in your family who also like to write?

My Nana used to write stories when I was a child. But she never had anything published.

Q: As a child, were you a dreamer?

Q: Last but not least, the magic genie has granted you one wish.  What would that be?

I will write at dozen brilliant books and their merits will be recognized in my lifetime.

Q: Thank you so much for this interview! Do you have any final words?
