Interview with Jennifer Chase, author of ‘Dead Cold’

Jennifer Chase

Jennifer Chase is a multi award-winning crime fiction author and consulting criminologist. Jennifer holds a bachelor degree in police forensics and a master’s degree in criminology & criminal justice. These academic pursuits developed out of her curiosity about the criminal mind as well as from her own experience with a violent sociopath, providing Jennifer with deep personal investment in every story she tells. In addition, she holds certifications in serial crime and criminal profiling.  She is an affiliate member of the International Association of Forensic Criminologists.

Her latest book is the crime thriller, Dead Cold.

Thanks for stopping by, Jennifer. I know everyone is excited to find out all they can about your new crime thriller, Dead Cold. Can you tell us what it is about?

Jennifer: Thank you for having me. Dead Cold is a crime thriller featuring a vigilante detective who hunts down serial killers, child abductors, and some of the most violent criminals. She accomplishes this as a vigilante detective conducting her own in-depth investigation that is sent to the police anonymously. In Dead Cold, a serial killer terrorizes a small California community by leaving frozen body parts in public places for police to put all the pieces together in order to find the killer.

What drew you to writing this kind of story?

Jennifer: I love thrillers and crime stories. I have also been a big fan of the action 80s movies and they have influenced my writing style. It’s been a dream come true writing action thrillers with an unusual and strong female character.

Can you tell us a little about your main character, Emily Stone?

Jennifer: Emily Stone is tough, flawed, fighting internal demons, dedicated to hunting down the most dangerous killers, while living with the reality of the victims that she couldn’t save in time. She was a cop that blew the whistle on her own, which forced her to rethink her mission and disappear into anonymity. With a background in behavioral profiling and forensics, she a force to be reckoned with during her investigations. Every case drives her closer to her limits—both physically and emotionally.

What are her strengths and what are her weaknesses?

Jennifer: Emily Stone’s strengths are her determination, intelligence, and her ability to track serial killers. She’s flawed and has all of the feelings that the rest of us do, but she has to push past them to save the next life.

How about Danny Starr? Can you tell us a little about him?

Jennifer: Detective Danny Starr is the lead investigator that catches the frozen body parts case. He’s the youngest police officer to be promoted to detective at the department. He’s smart and dedicated. One of the department’s legendary detectives who died from a heart attack mentored Starr. There was talk around the police department about a phantom detective, but most believe it’s just talk—except for Starr. He doesn’t realize that Emily Stone is shadowing his cases. Will their paths cross or collide?

Can you tell us the origin of the title “Dead Cold”?

Jennifer: All of the Emily Stone Thrillers are titled with Dead or Cold. With Dead Cold, it relates to the frozen body parts that kick starts the investigation.

Will you be writing more crime thrillers in the future?

Jennifer: Absolutely! I have another forensic mystery series with a release of Scene of the Crime coming before the end of the year. I will also have an Emily Stone Novella released at the beginning of 2018, along with the next Emily Stone Thriller, Dark Lies, scheduled to release in the spring of 2018.

About the Book:

Author: Jennifer Chase

Pages: 326
Genre: Crime Thriller

What happens when one California community has a disturbing spike in homicides? It catapults cops into a deadly game of murder. Frozen human body parts hideously displayed at the crime scenes offers a horrifying interpretation that only a sadistic serial killer could design—and execute.

On the hunt for a complex serial killer, vigilante detective Emily Stone must face her most daring case yet. Stone’s proven top-notch profiling skills and forensic expertise may not be enough this time.

Young and ambitious, Detective Danny Starr, catches the homicide cases and discovers that it will test everything he knows about police work and the criminal mind. Can he handle these escalating cases or will the police department have to call in reinforcements—the FBI.

Emily Stone’s covert team pushes with extreme urgency to unravel the grisly clues, while keeping their identities hidden from the police. With one last-ditch effort, Stone dangles someone she loves as bait to draw out the killer. She then forces the killer out of their comfort zone with her partner Rick Lopez, and with help from a longtime friend Jordan Smith. A revelation of the serial killer’s identity leaves the team with volatile emotions that could destroy them.

The killer continues to taunt and expertly manipulate the police, as well as Stone’s team, and as they run out of time—they leave behind everyone and everything—in Dead Cold.
