Alicia will be on hand during her nationwide tour talking about her book in candid interviews and guest posts! About Alicia Singleton

Alicia SingletonBorn and raised in Philadelphia, the Howard University graduate embraced the written word at an early age. She credits this to her loving, older sister whom, while they were youngsters, made the author eat lotion on a regular basis. Realizing the need to sound-out the ingredients on the lotion label, Alicia stopped the lotion-eating practice, but continued to read the labels of the concoctions her sister brought for her to try. This early necessity to read flowered to a passion; hence, a writer was born.

The award winning author resides in Maryland with her wonderful husband and son. Still an avid reader, label or otherwise, Alicia is hard at work completing her next suspense novel. Her latest book is the suspense novel, Dark Side of Valor. Visit Alicia’s website at www.aliciasingleton.com.

As the director of ChildSafe Shelters, she ventures to abandoned squats and crackhouses to rescue teens from the hellish streets of Los Angeles. When she is summoned to Washington to serve on a committee that aids the children of a war-torn African nation, Lelia is kidnapped and becomes a political pawn in a sinister conspiracy. Oceans away from everything she knows, she must trust a mercenary to save her life, or die in the clutches of a psychopath.

Hunting, combat and staying alive are Elijah Dune’s specialties. Vengeance is his passion. Haunted by past demons, he’s travels to the Motherland to collect a debt. A debt that demands one payment. Death.

Caught in the crosshairs of a madman, Lelia and Elijah must survive the jungles of Zaire and the horrors of their pasts or be forever consumed by the DARK SIDE OF VALOR.

The Story Behind the Book is one of Literarily Speaking’s most popular features. Here we find out either the inspiration behind authors’ books or how they got published. Today’s guest is Nancy Stewart, author of Sea Turtle Summer (Guardian Angel Publishing).

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Sea Turtle Summer came to me, not on a glorious beach with glimmering white sand, but in a stark utilitarian hospital room. Talk about being led by your muse. She had to work wonders with this one.

My husband was recovering from back surgery (happily, he’s fine now). I sat in his hospital room, net book on lap and waited for her to come calling. And she did, demanding another Bella and Britt book. About sea turtles.

So I began Sea Turtle Summer on a frigid February morning in St. Louis and was instantly transported to Clearwater Beach, where the weather was balmy and the beach was getting busy. A female Loggerhead sea turtle was heading back to the sea, but her nest was in trouble. Enter Bella and Britt, and the girls and I were off and running.

It’s a funny thing, inspiration. Sea Turtle Summer, I know, was a combination of my many early walks walks on Clearwater Beach, all the conversations about the plight of sea turtles and time on my hands that morning, willing my muse to conjure up a worthy story. She hardly ever fails.

Once it began, the book came quickly, and I was able to get the main story in place by the time my husband went home. Some books do that, I find. Some don’t. But whichever way they begin, the end game is the goal. Oh, that and something wonderful and magical in the pages between. Let’s hope my muse worked her magic in Sea Turtle Summer.

After having been both an elementary school teacher, a university professor of education and a consultant for New Options, Inc. in New York City, Nancy Stewart writes children’s books full time. She, her husband and three sons, lived in London for eight years, where she was a consultant to several universities, including Cambridge.

Her travels take her extensively throughout the world, most particularly Africa. Nancy is US chair of a charity in Lamu, Kenya, that places girls in intermediate schools to allow them to further their education.

Nancy is the author of the Bella and Britt picture book series, One Pelican at a Time, Sea Turtle Summer, Bella Saves the Beach and Mystery at Manatee Key. All are published by Guardian Angel Publishing. Pelican was nominated for a Global eBook Award and recently was awarded the Literary Classics Seal of Approval. Both books have been on the Amazon bestsellers list and Sea Turtle Summer appears on their Hot New Release and Most Wished for lists.

She was featured in the PBS Tampa (WEDU) series, Gulfwatch. It concerned the writing of One Pelican at a Time: A Story of the Gulf Oil Spill.
She and her family live in St. Louis and Tampa.

Guest Blogger 2Chris Shella’s Best Advice Ever for Writing Urban Fiction  Legal Thriller Novels

By Chris Shella

Advice, Advice Advice…. What advice could I give new writers on how to write Urban Fiction Legal Thrillers? HMMMM. Well you do know as a lawyer I’m allergic to giving free advice. So instead of charging my usual 500 hour fee rate, I will let you, gentle reader, in on how to do this.

There are three keys to writing this type of book.

Reasonable FacsimileThe first key to writing an urban fiction legal thriller is that you have to know something about the legal system. I cannot tell you how many books, by some of the most famous authors in the world I have thrown down in disgust because they are so wrong on the law and how the criminal justice system works. Legal thrillers work only when they have a basis in reality and how the law operates. Now you don’t have to be a lawyer for this to be in your story. All you have to do is to sit in a courtroom anywhere in the country and watch cases (pleas and trials)for about a month and you will be surprised how much legal jargon and how much of the legal process you will pick up that way. DO NOT,I repeat DO NOT watch movies like “The Firm” or “Legal Eagles”. They are Hollywood’s idea of trial work. If you want Hollywood’s idea of trial work you might as well make the Judge an elf and the prosecutor a demon. It will have just as much of a basis in reality as that stuff does

The second key is to actually put trial work into your novel. I know as a criminal trial lawyer, I’m prejudice against non-trial lawyers but I find that all the people who have read my work love the insights into the justice system that my book gives them. So if you truly want to write a legal thriller, you have to have more than a protagonist who is a lawyer. You have to insert legal work into the book, which should be easy since you have spent a month in a courthouse observing how lawyers work. People are always curious about the lawyers and law and if you put that element in your book you already have quite a few readers hooked.

Lastly, the most important key to writing an Urban Fiction Legal thriller is sitting your butt in a chair and actually writing. You can read all the books in the world about how to be a writer but you will never be one until you are one. Sit at a computer or put pen to paper but you just have to do it. Writing isn’t easy and can be very daunting. But just realize no one is going to shoot you or put you in jail if they don’t like your writing, but no one will ever like your work if you never create it.

Chris ShellaAuthor Chris Shella is a graduate of Morehouse College and the University of Texas Law School and started his legal career in Long Island, New York at the Nassau County District Attorney’s Office. He is admitted to the practice of law in New York, Maryland, the District of Columbia, and North Carolina. Shella is also admitted to the federal court in the Eastern District of North Carolina, the Middle District of North Carolina, U.S. District of Columbia, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals, the Eastern District of New York, and the Southern District of New York.He is also admitted to the Bar Of The United States Supreme Court. He and his cases have been covered on Court TV, CNN, and in the New York Times, and other media outlets across the globe. He has represented everyone from lawyers to major drug traffickers to a serial killer in Baltimore. His two most famous case are the Vegan Baby Case and his defense of the Duke Lacrosse Case accuser for the alleged murder of her boyfriend.

Chris now resides in Durham, North Carolina, with his wife and son.

His latest book is the legal thriller, Reasonable Facsimile.

The Secret of the Sacred Scarab

Pump Up Your Book is pleased to announce Fiona Ingram’s  The Secret of the Sacred Scarab Virtual Book Tour 2012 beginning on January 3  and ending on February 29 2012. Fiona will be on hand during her worldwide tour talking about her book in candid interviews, you’ll be able to read her first ever Twitterview, and she will be giving away copies of her book along the way!  Lots of fun as Fiona stops off at blogs around the world to give her fans a chance to ask her questions and to find out more about this beautiful and talented author.

About Fiona Ingram

Fiona Ingram

Although Fiona Ingram has been a journalist for the last fifteen years, writing a children’s bookThe Secret of the Sacred Scarab—was an unexpected step, inspired by a recent trip to Egypt. The tale of the sacred scarab began life as a little anecdotal tale for her 2 nephews (then 10 and 12), who had accompanied her on the Egyptian trip. This short story grew into an award-winning children’s book, the first in the adventure series Chronicles of the Stone. The author has already completed the next book in the series—The Search for the Stone of Excalibur—a huge treat for young King Arthur fans.

Although Fiona Ingram does not have children of her own, she has an adopted teenage foster child, from an underprivileged background who is just discovering the joys of reading for pleasure. Fiona’s experiences in teaching her daughter to read has resulted in her interest in child literacy and in creating ways to get kids more interested in reading, as well as helping parents to instil a love of reading in their children.

Naturally, Fiona is a voracious reader and has been from early childhood. Her interests include literature, art, theatre, collecting antiques, animals, music, and films. She loves travel and has been fortunate to have lived in Europe (while studying) and America (for work). She has travelled widely and fulfilled many of her travel goals.

Fiona’s latest book is the middle grade adventure novel, The Secret of the Sacred Scarab – Book 1 in the Chronicles of the Stone series.

LS Story-Behind-Book4

The Story Behind the Book is one of Literarily Speaking’s most popular features. Here we find out either the inspiration behind authors’ books or how they got published. Today’s guest is John Rosenman, author of Dax Rigby, War Correspondent (MuseItUp Publishing).

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Dax Rugby CoverDax Rigby, War Correspondent – Why I Wrote it and How I Published It

by John B. Rosenman

A distant, alien world. In several of my novels, I have been drawn to such a place, and so I was in Dax Rigby, War Correspondent. Why? Basically because anything can happen there. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. I’ve never been able to resist the opportunity to let my imagination stretch its wings and soar as high as it can, even to take reckless chances if necessary.

So, in the novel Dax is not only a handsome action hero but a likeable idealist with a painful, mean streets childhood who embodies a cosmic secret he has yet to learn. Who and what is he really? Can he cope with the truth of his real identity, or will he crumble?

This SF action-adventure also gave me the opportunity to create and explore a complex alien world with two intelligent extraterrestrial species and an improbable romance between an older, sexually aggressive copter pilot and young Dax. Poor guy, he tries to be faithful to his girlfriend Lexis, even though she lives back on Earth, nine hundred light-years away.

I also love mystery, and as in other novels I’ve written, the hero is confronted with several. What is killing and making humans and aliens so sick on the planet Arcadia, and what is the conspiracy he struggles to uncover? Above all, who is the deadly leader of the conspiracy, the evil mastermind who tries to kill him, and why does he or she do it?

Ultimately, it is how Dax Rigby copes with the numerous, life-threatening challenges on Arcadia that inspired me more than anything else to tell his story. Most of us would have caved in quickly if we were in Dax’s place, but his predicament offered me the chance to explore and develop his character based on the seemingly overwhelming obstacles he faced. Can he solve not only the manifold mysteries of Arcadia and save the human outpost and two dying alien species there, but also help stop World War III back on Earth and save six billion lives?

How It Got Published – After shopping Dax Rigby around with major publishers and agents, I did more market research and placed it with Lyrical Press. The publisher did the cover, presenting young Dax as a hunk whose shirt is open, exposing his muscular, chiseled chest. I liked the cover, but perhaps it’s too romance-y. Dax is sexy, but he ain’t Fabio.

When the novel didn’t reach as wide an audience as I had hoped, the publisher and I amicably parted ways, and I submitted it to MuseItUp Publishing. As with Lyrical Press, I followed their submission and formatting guidelines carefully, something that’s important. After all, if you don’t follow a publisher’s guidelines to the letter, you run the risk of being rejected without even being read.

As with Lyrical Press, I had editors. At MuseItUp, the editing process is the best and most rigorous I’ve ever seen. My editors, Chris Spellman (Content Editor) and Penny Ehrenkranz (Line Editor) took me through multiple drafts. Plus, Tiger Matthews did a great cover for the book. Altogether, it was a collaborative effort, and the novel is better for their input.

And that’s why and how I did it. Now comes the really hard part: promoting my book and getting Dax’s word out.

John recently retired as an English professor at Norfolk State University where he designed and taught a course in how to write Science fiction and Fantasy. He is a former Chairman of the Board of the HorrorJohn Rosenman photo Writers Association and has published approximately 350 stories in places such as Weird Tales, Whitley Strieber’s Aliens, Fangoria, Galaxy, The Age of Wonders, and the Hot Blood anthology series. John has published twenty books, including SF action/romantic adventure novels such as Beyond Those Distant Stars and Speaker of the Shakk (Mundania Press), A Senseless Act of Beauty (Crossroad Press), and Alien Dreams (Drollerie Press and Crossroad Press). Shorter books include A Mingling of Souls and Music Man (XoXo Publishing), Here Be Dragons(Eternal Press), The Voice of Many Waters (Blue Leaf Publications), Green in Our Souls(Damnation Books), and Bagonoun’s Wonderful Songbird and Childhood’s Day (Gypsy Shadow Publishing). Recent developments: MuseItUp Publishing published two novels, Dark Wizard andDax Rigby, War Correspondent. Another SF novel, Inspector of the Cross, will appear in February. MuseItUp Publishing also published More Stately Mansions and The Blue of Her Hair, the Gold of Her Eyes, and it will release Steam Heat, a tale of erotic horror in December.

In this fast-paced and action-packed time travel adventure, the wise-cracking whiz kid, Puggie Liddell’s modified Gameboy activates a time travel portal and he lands in the 1890s with his sibling rival, annoyingly prissy teen sister, Gigi, who thinks history is like-totally-gross.

The kids must learn to work together to find a time travel portal back to the present before the eccentric scientist, Nikola Tesla, or his arch nemesis, inventor Thomas Edison, can steal the Gameboy and use it to complete a death ray machine, an invention powerful enough to disturb the very fabric of space-time and create an instantaneous world disaster.

I have a wonderful guest today!  Nicolette M. Dumke, author of the health/fitness book, Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss: Control Your Body Chemistry, Reduce Inflammation, and Improve Your Health (Allergy Adapt, Inc.), is on a blog tour December 5 – 16 answering questions about nutrition.  I am happy to be hosting her today and here’s my question:

“I recently gave up carbonated sodas in my diet and two months later, I lost an astounding 18 pounds.  I also gave up sweets during that time but have brought them back to an occasional cookie, etc.  I don’t see a weight increase and am continuing with my non-soda diet plus walking 1/2 mile in the morning, although I do drink sweet tea.  My question is that I’m wondering what sweets actually do to the body besides taking in excess calories.  Do they play havoc with other parts of your insides?”

Nicolette DumkeNicolette:  “Sodas are major culprits in the weight gain battle. A 12-ounce can of soda contains 38 to 40 grams of carbohydrate, or the equivalent of about 10 teaspoons of sugar. A 44 to 45-ounce super-sized fountain soda contains as many as 186 grams of carbohydrate. This is the equivalent of almost one cup of table sugar! If consumed without food, the sugar in a soda enters the bloodstream very rapidly. This causes blood sugar levels to shoot up, followed by a similarly dramatic rise in insulin levels.

The best-kept secret about weight gain and loss is that calories are not the only, or even the major, determiner of weight. Hormones, such as insulin, cortisol, leptin, and others, are what really determine our weight. High insulin levels, which are likely to occur after drinking a soda, affect the enzymes that control fat metabolism. These enzymes tell your body, “Hold on to any food you get,” thus causing weight gain, as well as making it impossible to mobilize body fat for use in physical activity. High insulin levels also make us feel hungry, thus leading us to eat even more food. For more about insulin and other hormones and how you can control them to help you lose weight, see http://www.foodallergyandglutenfreeweightloss.com/controlling_hormones.html.

Here is why giving up sodas has produced such dramatic weight loss: Your insulin levels are remaining low and stable much of the time. This allows you to burn body fat and makes you feel less hungry. Because your body is put into a “burn fat” mode by low insulin levels, your morning walk burns body fat very effectively. Other types of moderate exercise, such as gardening, house cleaning, and leisurely bicycling or swimming, would also promote weight loss. However, walkers are the most successful at losing weight and maintaining their loss. Excessive or overly strenuous exercise, especially if done without food, unsettles our weight-controlling hormones and can even promote weight gain or impede weight loss. For more about this see http://www.foodallergyandglutenfreeweightloss.com/exercise_right.html.

Food AllergySweet tea is a better beverage than soda because it contains much less sugar. If you are adding the sugar yourself, you probably add only one to two teaspoons per glass of tea, or 4 to 8 grams of carbohydrate. If you find your weight loss slowing down, or for optimal health, you might want to sweeten your tea with stevia. The purified white powder form of this herb, especially in “next generation” stevia products such as those made by Protocol for Life Balance™, is a great sweetener for everything from baking to beverages. In addition, health food stores sell flavored stevia solutions to add to tea and coffee. Stevia contains no calories and does not cause blood sugar or insulin levels to rise. On the other hand, studies have shown that artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame™ can cause weight gain in some people, so if you want to give up sugar in your tea, stevia is the healthiest choice.

An occasional cookie, especially if eaten with a protein-containing meal or even a snack of nuts or cheese, is also less problematic than a soda for two reasons: (1) It contains less sugar, and (2) The fat and fiber in the cookie (oatmeal cookies are good for fiber), as well as the protein fat, and fiber in the meal or snack, buffer the impact of the carbohydrate in the cookie on blood sugar and insulin levels.

Although sugar is mentioned repeatedly here, it is not the only culprit among sweeteners. High fructose corn syrup (HFCS), which has recently been re-branded as “corn sugar,” is as bad or worse. Because the single sugars in HFCS are “free” rather than bonded together in pairs as in table sugar (sucrose), HFCS enters the bloodstream even more rapidly than sugar, causing an even higher insulin response. Sodas are usually sweetened with HFCS, which may be part of the reason they are so detrimental to health. For more about the negative health effects of HFCS, see the 10-1-2008 post about half way down this page: http://www.chemicalfreekids.com/updates08.htm.

Sweets play havoc on our bodies in other ways. Excess consumption of sweets, with the resulting repeated jolts to the pancreas (the organ that produces insulin) can wear out the pancreas, resulting in type II diabetes.

Another problem with sweets is that sugar has a detrimental effect on our intestinal ecosystems of bacteria and other microorganisms. Sugar promotes the growth of unfriendly bacteria and yeast in the digestive system as well as elsewhere in the body. Its ability to encourage yeast of the Candida species can be especially problematic. Thus, diets high in sweets can lead to disordered intestinal flora (called dysbiosis), digestive problems, leaky gut syndrome, and food allergies. People who develop Crohn’s disease, an inflammatory bowel disease, often have habitually eaten diets high in sweets.

Sweet! That’s what sugar is, but for best health and weight reserve it for occasional treats. The rest of the time, sweeten your goodies with liquid fruit sweeteners such as fruit juice concentrates or Fruit Sweet™, date or coconut sugar, honey, agave, or stevia. Have fresh fruit for treats or dessert and nuts or other protein foods for snacks. Keep up the good work on walking and avoiding sodas, and you will reach your ideal weight more easily than you might imagine.

Nickie Dumke enjoys helping people with food allergies and gluten intolerance find solutions to their health and weight problems. She began writing books to help others with multiple food allergies over 20 years ago and the process culminated in The Ultimate Food Allergy Cookbook and Survival Guide. She says, “This book contains everything I know to help with food allergies,” and it has helped many people come back from near-starvation. Her other books address issues such as how to deal with time and money pressures on special diets, keeping allergic children happy on their diets, and more.

A few years ago, while listening to the struggles of an allergic friend on the Weight Watchers™ diet, she remembered her own weight struggles* many years ago and thought, “There has to be a better way.” This was the beginning of a new quest, and she is now helping those who are overweight due to inflammation (often due to unsuspected food allergies) or high-in-rice gluten-free diets, as well as those who are not food sensitive but want to lose weight permanently, healthily, and without feeling hungry and deprived. Her unique approach to weight and health presented in Food Allergy and Gluten-Free Weight Loss is based on body physiology and reveals why conventional weight-loss diets work against rather than with our bodies and therefore rarely result in permanent weight loss.

* (Nickie’s weight loss story, briefly, is that in her early 20s she could not lose on a calorie-counting diet in spite of repeatedly further reducing the number of calories she ate and swimming vigorously and often. Then she found a diet based on blood sugar control, lost weight without being hungry, and still weighs what she did in her mid-20s).

Nickie has had multiple food allergies for 30 years and has been cooking for special diets for family members and friends for even longer. Regardless of how complex your dietary needs are or how much or little cooking you have done, she has the books and recipes you need. Her books present the science behind multiple food allergies and weight control in an easily-understood manner. She has BS degrees in medical technology and microbiology. She and her husband live in Louisville, Colorado and have two grown sons.

You can visit Nickie’s websites at http://www.foodallergyandglutenfreeweightloss.com and http://www.food-allergy.org.

abba

It’s time to deck the halls and what better way to do it is to find out what your favorite authors are up to this joyous and oh-so-busy time of year. Today’s guest is me!  I’m on a mini-virtual book tour for Romancing the Soul: True Stories of Soul Mates from Around the World and Beyond (Zumaya Publications) and I thought it would be cool to let everyone know how I deck the halls, too!

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Dorothy websiteThank you for being my guest at Literarily Speaking! Is Christmas your favorite holiday?

Dorothy: Well you are welcome!  Don’t I know you? Oh, never mind.  What were we talking about?  Oh, yes, is Christmas my favorite holiday?  Absolutely!  Feasts, family and friends – what more could you want?

How do you prepare for the holidays?  Do you decorate?

Dorothy: I do decorate.  This year I’m getting a late start because we have 64 authors on tour (not blaming them!) but a girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do.  Can you believe it’s December 8 and I still don’t have my tree up?  Well honey…let me tell you, today I started bringing up the boxes from the mud room closet downstairs and I’m going through them while I wait for my son to get his toosh over here to help me put it up this weekend.  We live in a condo so no decorating outside except for a wreath on the back door but inside it’s Christmas wonderland..once I get it up of course!

What’s your most favorite ornament?

Dorothy:  Hm…I love my red hat ladies ornament and the ornaments that were handmade by my kids when they were little but my favorite….that’s a toughie.  Now my most sentimental one is an ornament that was either my grandmother’s or my great-grandmother’s.  I used to put it on the tree to have my loved ones with me, but I was afraid it would get broken so I tucked it away.  This year I’m looking for an ornament where you can put a picture inside.  Cassie, my fifteen year old cocker spaniel died in August and she would have so loved to have been here this year to help open presents.

What’s your favorite outside activity during the holidays?  Or are you a winter hating humbug like me?

Dorothy:  Okay since I asked myself my own question, I guess you know I’m a winter hating humbug.  Here’s the thing.  We live on the water.  That might sound all nice and everything and you can’t beat it in the summer but the winters are torturous.  Our carport is like a wind tunnel and sometimes you can’t even catch your breath just getting in the  car.  However, no matter how much it snows, I still like playing in it.

What kind of holiday activities do you enjoy doing with family and/or friends?

Dorothy:  My daughter is a gourmet cook and with all gourmet cooks comes the want to get everyone out of the kitchen – including me.  But, we do get together to do the Christmas dinner thing.  My son, daughter and I get together to go Christmas shopping, the few days that are available where we can all be together at once.  We used to do more, but they’re older now. Sigh.

What is the best present anyone could ever give to you?

Dorothy:  Peace of mind that the world is going to stay a safe place.

If you could go anywhere in the world during the holidays, where would that be?

Dorothy:  Wow, what a great question, Dorothy!  How did you know I love to travel?  Well.  If I could go anywhere I wanted to during the holidays, it would be to a cabin in a Smokies and have an old-fashioned Christmas.

Solid white lights or multicolored lights?

Dorothy: White inside, colored out (although I have to fight with my daughter on this one as she likes white both inside and out).

Favorite holiday song?

Dorothy:  What’s the one by Mariah Carey?  Oh wait, the one in Home Alone?  No wait wait…my mother used to have a Christmas album of Johnny Mathis songs.  When I hear one of his songs playing at Christmas, that really takes me back.

Have you ever had to spend a Christmas away from home?

Dorothy:  Nope.

What do you want Santa to bring you this year?

Dorothy:  A nice long tropical vacation (preferably not during hurricane season).

One last question, isn’t this fun?  What does Christmas mean to you?

Dorothy: I said it above – feasts, family and friends. ;o)

Thanks so much for the interview, Dorothy.  Do you have any final words?

Dorothy: May everyone have a Happy Holiday!

It’s time to deck the halls and what better way to do it is to find out what your favorite authors are up to this joyous and oh-so-busy time of year. Today’s guest is Braxton A. Cosby, author of the young adult science fiction novel, The Star-Crossed Saga: Protostar (Firefly Publishing & Ent,LLC).

•••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••

Braxton Cosby 4Thank you for being my guest at Literarily Speaking!  Is Christmas your favorite holiday?

Braxton: Yes. It’s the celebration of a risen savior. Plus, I love giving my kids and my family gifts. I like to see their faces light up when they receive something that I picked out for them that I thought they would like.

How do you prepare for the holidays?  Do you decorate?

Braxton: I’m the one responsible for the heavy lifting. I get the lights out from the attic; place them everywhere in and around the house. I’m also responsible for getting out the tree and the decorations. My wife mainly decorates the house and she, the girls and I decorate the tree together.

What’s your most favorite ornament?

Braxton: I have a green ornament from my grandmother who passed away ten years ago. We keep it and always hang it in a place where people can see it. Strong source of my faith and inspiration.

What’s your favorite outside activity during the holidays?  Or are you a winter hating humbug like me?

Braxton: No, I love the holidays. Believe it or not, I like to be out in the malls during the holidays. I like to see people buying each other gifts and sharing love with one another. People seem to be more cheerful and polite during the holidays.

ProtostarWhat kind of holiday activities do you enjoy doing with family and/or friends?

Braxton: Watching movies and having dinner. We usually get together during Christmas Eve and sit around until the kids fall asleep. That’s when we open at least one gift (adults) at midnight.

What is the best present anyone could ever give to you?

Braxton: I received the best spiritual gift of already; salvation. But if I could get an earthly gift, I’d love a classic silver Corvette with red leather interior.

If you could go anywhere in the world during the holidays, where would that be?

Braxton: Traveling during the holidays, hmm. I’d love to take my wife to Paris one year and take in the New Year at the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Solid white lights or multicolored lights?

Braxton: I like classic solid white lights myself.

Favorite holiday song?

Braxton: Jingle bells. The girls sing that one pretty good.

Have you ever had to spend a Christmas away from home?

Braxton: No, I could not stand it if I had to. My girls have to see their gifts under the tree.

What do you want Santa to bring you this year?

Braxton: A fabulous opportunity to extend my vision of young love and the power of choice to millions of readers all over the world.

One last question, isn’t this fun?  What does Christmas mean to you?

Braxton: This has been a wonderful experience. Christmas to me is the chance to express God’s love to one another and take the opportunity to practice considering someone else’s wants for a change. Being able to say thank you to the people you care about and relax in that special kind of love is priceless.

Thanks so much for the interview, Braxton.  Do you have any final words?

Braxton: See the vision, receive it, believe on it and pray to God to give you the courage to walk in it. Follow what is true to you, even if you undergo scrutiny. In the end, at least you followed your own sense of purpose, win or lose.

Braxton A. Cosby is a dreamer with a vision of continuously evolving and maximizing the untapped potential of the human spirit. Braxton received a lot of his inspiration from watching the accomplishments and exploits of his famous uncle, comedic legend Bill Cosby. A physical therapist by background, Braxton received his Bachelors, Masters, and Doctorate from the University of Miami. Braxton’s fascination of science grew into an obsession of Sci-fi and on one unassuming Sunday, this self-proclaimed romantic decided to pursue a “calling” to create a new genre of writing; Sci-Fance- mixing science fiction and romance. Braxton lives in Georgia with his wife and two children. He believes that everyone should pursue joy that surpasses understanding and live each day as if it were the last.

His latest book is the young adult science fiction novel, The Star-Crossed Saga: Protostar.

Sarah Tate is a single mother living and working in Switzerland. She arrived in Switzerland ten years ago and apart from a brief stay in France, has remained ever since, as Switzerland has become her adopted homeland.

Sarah has three young kids, who take up most of her time, but she still managed to find time to write her first book ‘Web of Lies – My life with a Narcissist’. The book is an auto-biographical novel which describes in graphic details, the ups and downs of life with a person who suffers from (amongst other things) Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Web of Lies takes the reader on an emotional journey and gives a deep insight into what it’s like to be sucked into the world of a disordered individual, and more importantly, how to escape with your sanity intact.

Her second book, Renaissance – A Journal of Discovery, is the sequel to Web of Lies. It describes the road to recovery from narcissistic abuse, and charts the progress of Sarah and her children as they rebuild their lives following the breakup of the family, and slowly come to terms with the financial and emotional devastation caused by Sarah’s ex.

Sarah has discovered a passion for writing, and is about to embark upon her first novel, a psychological thriller.

About Web of Lies

Web of Lies takes you on an emotional roller-coaster, experienced through the eyes of Sarah Tate, an intelligent, young newcomer to Switzerland who is swept off her feet by an older, more experienced company manager. Within weeks of their meeting, Bill impresses her with a courtship vastly unusual in modern times. He lures Sarah with his intellect along with numerous gifts, expensive restaurants, and trips to luxury hotels. Sarah, who is searching for not only love but security, quickly finds herself falling for the worldly but sensitive and caring man Bill represents himself to be. In Web of Lies, she describes the highs and the lows of what it is like to be involved with a person with Narcissistic Personality Disorder, how to come to terms with the abuse, and most importantly, how to escape.

Bill, who is seventeen years older than Sarah, has led what she finds at first to be a fascinating life. Married twice before, he has been recently widowed, after his second wife fell into depression and took her own life. Within months of their first meeting, Bill has proposed to Sarah, and they are planning a lavish wedding and exciting new life together. However, Sarah quickly starts to feel there may be more to Bill than meets the eye.

Sarah battles to keep the marriage on track, but is frustrated by Bill’s lackadaisical attitude towards work, and his constant bragging about how he’s going to make millions via various entrepreneurial schemes which never materialize.

Sarah eventually begins to wake up to Bill’s lies and schemes, but not before she discovers his dark side….

As the marriage ends, Sarah battles serious clinical depression in order to cope with the destructive relationship with Bill.

Sarah realizes finally that she must break the pattern of abuse in order to escape with her sanity intact. Mindful of protecting her children from him, she eventually stands up to Bill for the final time, and is left at the end to carve a new life. She is in debt and alone, but thankfully free from Bill’s negative and unhealthy influence.
