postheadericon Interview with Elyse Douglas: ‘It was an emotional compulsion to get Rita’s story out’

Elyse DouglasElyse Douglas is the pen name for the married writing team Elyse Parmentier and Douglas Pennington. Elyse grew up near the sea, roaming the beaches, reading and writing stories and poetry, receiving a Master’s Degree in English Literature from Columbia University. She has enjoyed careers as an English teacher, an actress and a speech-language pathologist. She and her husband, Douglas Pennington, have completed three novels: The Astrologer’s Daughter, Wanting Rita and a Christmas novel to be released later this year.

Douglas grew up in a family where music and astrology were second and third languages. He attended the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and played the piano professionally for many years. With his wife, Elyse, he has helped to pen The Astrologer’s Daughter and Wanting Rita.

When asked how they write a novel together, Doug often answers, “Well… If Elyse is dismissive and quietly pacing, then I know something’s not working. If I’m defensive, dramatic and defiant, then I know Elyse will soon be scowling and quietly pacing. We remind ourselves of Rita and Alan James in our novel, Wanting Rita. How the books get finished, I don’t know.”

Q: Thank you so much for this interview, Elyse and Douglas.  Can you tell us where you are from?

First of all, we want to clarify that Elyse Douglas is our pen name.  We are a married writing team who live and work in New York City.  Elyse is originally from Massachusetts and Douglas is from Ohio.  We met at a writer’s workshop about 20 years ago.  We married soon after that, and have been collaborating ever since.

Wanting Rita 2Q: How did you come up with your title?

Rita is the main character of the book and Alan James, who falls in love with her in high school, knows she is his soul mate.  Despite several separations, he never stops loving her.

Q: They say you can judge a book by its cover.  Can you tell us a little about your cover and who designed it?

The cover is from an oil painting by Elyse’s mother, Monique Parmentier.  It hangs in our living room.  One day as we were looking at it, we realized that it depicts a scene that takes place in the last part of Section One.  Alan James is watching Rita walk through the woods, painfully aware that he has lost her and she’s going to marry someone else.

Q: Can you tell us something about your book that would make me run out and buy it?

It’s a beautiful love story.  The characters leap off the page; they delight and charm you.  It also allows you to relive the obsession, passion and awkwardness of high school and first love — and then takes you on a tender, romantic journey as the characters struggle as adults fifteen years later to create a new life, despite tragedy and separation.

Q: Are there any messages in this book that you want the reader to know about?

The beauty of the human spirit as it struggles to understand life and love.

Q: What was your most favorite chapter to write and why?

No single chapter comes to mind, but we are particularly pleased with the first section, entitled Now and Then.  It uses flashbacks while staying firmly anchored in the present.  It was a challenge to the keep the story moving, while delivering the emotion and information needed to provide a good foundation to the book.

Q: Why did you feel you had to write this book?

It was an emotional compulsion to get Rita’s story out.  She’s a delightful combination of sweetness, volatility, wonder and intelligence.  She was loosely based on two girls that Douglas had dated: one in high school and one in college.

Q:  Now, some fun questions – What deep dark secret would you like to share with us?

Douglas: When I was a kid, I used to break into houses.  I never took anything.  I was more interested in exploring hidden secrets, and seeing what things people had; what clothes they wore; what they had in the frig.  Thank God I was never caught.

Elyse: I have nothing to compare with that.  When I was about 12, a friend convinced me to throw rocks at cars, and the first car I hit was a police car.  The cops came after me, took down my name and phone number, and told me they’d contact my parents (which they never did).  After that, I was convinced that I had no luck whatsoever in getting away with anything illegal.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Elyse:  I want to visit Alaska to experience the stillness and majesty of the glaciers.

Douglas: I would return to the beautiful Caribbean island of St. Eustatius.

Q: Are you a morning person or a night person?

Doug and I are definitely night people. We love the stillness of midnight, the play of night-time shadows, the glow of moonlight on icy snow, the cool night air in summer, the creaking of bare tree limbs in winter.

Q: Are there any members in your family who also like to write?

Douglas: My  father wrote a couple of novels when I was a kid. They took place in Kentucky.  They were never published.

Q: As a child, were you a dreamer?

Oh yes.  Elyse dreamed about being a missionary or a writer, and Douglas had dreams of playing shortstop for the Cincinnati Reds.

Q: Last but not least, the magic genie has granted you one wish.  What would that be?

To see Wanting Rita read and enjoyed by many people, and to have the book made into a successful feature film.

Q: Thank you so much for this interview! Do you have any final words?

We are editing two Christmas books which we will release in the fall.  Both protagonists are strong women who run their own businesses and think they know what they want — but they both need a little Christmas magic to help them uncover the secrets of their own hearts.

Thank you for giving us the time to chat with you.  Cheers!

0367Elyse Douglas, authors of Wanting Rita, are my guests today! Welcome Elyse & Douglas!

Ten Things About WANTING RITA You May Not Know

By Elyse Douglas

    1.  Elyse Douglas is actually a husband-and-wife writing team, Elyse Parmentier and Douglas Pennington.  We met about 20 years ago at a writers’ workshop in NYC, married soon after, and have been collaborating ever since.

    2. The character of Rita in WANTING RITA was originally based on two women:  Doug’s high school sweetheart and his first love in college.

    3. Douglas’s great, great grandfather lived in Kentucky to be 134 years old and was known to be a great storyteller.  He died in 1922.  His Kentucky Flintlock Rifle sold for more than $40,000 at a recent auction.

Wanting Rita 24. The book cover for WANTING RITA was painted by Elyse’s mother, Monique Parmentier.

    5.  The idea and most of the story for WANTING RITA came during a night of insomnia.  We worked on the first draft 6 days a week, 6 hours a day for 7 months.

    6. We originally envisioned Charlize Theron as Rita.

    7.  We changed the book’s ending when a NYC literary agent, who was editing and representing it, said he would “throw the book out the window” if we didn’t change it.  We did.

    8.  Elyse enjoys working with prose and Douglas loves writing dialogue.

    9.  Between them, Elyse and Douglas have written 12 novels.  Most will never see the light of day.  But all the novels were great teachers.

    10. Elyse likes reading male authors such as Jonathan Franzen, Robert James Waller and Charles Dickens.  Douglas likes to read Jane Smiley, Anita Shreve and Jane Austen.

Tina Haveman is the founder and CEO of eXtasy Books and Devine Destinies. Tina was born in Europe, left there at age eight, then traveled to several countries with her parents, to finally settle in Australia for many years. She immigrated to Canada in 1973 where she has lived since.

After raising a family of five as a single mother, she finally found time to concentrate on her writing. In 2000 she started her own publishing house with a partner but became too busy with eXtasy and Devine to continue her involvement and withdrew to focus entirely on eXtasy and Devine.

Tina devotes all her time to her publishing house and authors and is grateful for the success her company is experiencing. “After many years of struggling to keep my head above water while raising five children on my own, I have much to be thankful for,” said Tina. “While the company affords me a comfortable living now and I have quite a staff aboard, I thoroughly enjoy what I do and won’t stop until someone up above tells me it’s time.”

      About eXtasy Books

eXtasy Books first opened its doors December 2002 with a small website that was soon revamped into a more business like site. Within a matter of months, eXtasy outgrew that website and had to build another site to accommodate its growing catalog. Since then, the site has been revamped a number of times. Our imprint, Devine Destinies, started in 2008 to accommodate mainstream, YA, inspirational and children’s books.
Since eXtasy’s birth, it has seen several upheavals, but with hard work, a loyal staff and a loyal stable of authors, eXtasy managed to survive them, along with the depression that hit our countries hard.
This past years has seen tremendous growth at eXtasy and we have moved our website to our own dedicated server to accommodate its growing readership.
We publish a wide variety of stories ranging from short stories to full books, pricing kept reasonable to accommodate our readers. Prices range from 1.59 to 5.99.
eXtasy Books has always been and is a devout supporter of e-books and e-readers. There are so many print books destroyed every year, it’s unbelievable. Go Green, is our motto. Save our forests! With so many new e-readers on the market, think about the ease of taking books along when traveling, getting rid of dust collecting books in your house, thereby making more room, being able to read a book on your phone or handheld while going to and from work on a bus or train. Think about the many books you can store on your computer. And think about the books you can hide from nosy relatives or children…

Ten Things About Artists and Thieves You May Not Know

      By Linda Schroeder

      1.  The peacock which occurs throughout the book is a little time traveler. It links the ancient past to the present. It begins the book and ends the book.

      2. Mai drives a Jaguar because a lot of fictional detectives, especially English, drive   Jaguar’s. My favorite is Dirk Gently. His Jaguar barely runs. Mai’s is a zippy convertible.

      3.  The town of Locke on the Sacramento River is a real historic Chinese town built in 1915 by Chinese and lived in only by Chinese immigrants who worked the levee farms.

Artists & Thieves4.   Angelo’s studio and Coconut Gallery on Fisherman’s Wharf are fictional places. Fisherman’s Wharf is real. So is the clam chowder and ice cream.

      5.  There used to be a diving bell on Fisherman’s wharf which you could go down in. It scared the heck out of my son when we took him down in it. I wrote a scene using the diving bell but had to cut it because it didn’t advance the plot.

      6.  Sardines is not a real jazz club in Cannery Row but it should be. It’s great. Cannery Row is a real location. A bit too much John Steinbeck there now.

      7.  I lived in Monterey when Cannery Row actually had canneries. When the fishing boats were in, the fishermen hung the nets to dry and the whole town smelled of fish. Mai always smells fish when she’s in Monterey.

      8.   Sutro Baths was a real playground–indoor swimming pools–for San Francisco’s wealthy in the early 1900’s and Hollywood stars had their pictures taken there, but it burned down in 1966. The ruins are still there and the climax of Artists & Thieves takes place in the ruins.

      9.  The song that Mai sings has these elements from Chinese poetry: red tears are tears which flow through the rouge on a sad woman’s cheeks;  the number 10,000 in Chinese tradition represents a maximum number–ten thousand kisses means the most that could be, ten thousand lonely nights means all the nights there are; moonlight reflects loneliness.

      10. One style of Chinese brush painting requires that a painting be completed “in one breath,”  that is, in one sitting. When Mai paints the birds in Chapter 4, she is painting in this style.

postheadericon Interview with Linda Schroeder, author of Artists and Thieves + win free kindle fire!

Artists and Thieves banner longWe have a wonderful guest with us today.  Linda Schroeder, author of Artists and Thieves, is here!  We interviewed Linda to find out more about her book and also we’re hosting her with a Kindle Fire giveaway!  Woot!  After the interview, enter using the Rafflecopter form.  Instructions are below and good luck!

      * * * * *

Q: Thank you so much for this interview, Linda. Can you tell us where you are from?

I live near San Diego, California. The Left Coast. A great place.

Q: How did you come up with your title?

It wasn’t easy. I had about ten working titles. The first one was Camera Obscura. I liked it because the art object in the book depicts a camera obscura. But since there is a band with the same name, I tried many other titles. Artists & Thieves seemed the best fit, since the two main characters are both artists who become thieves as they try to save an ancient Chinese bowl from other thieves.

Q: They say you can judge a book by its cover. Can you tell us a little about your cover and who designed it?

Jerry Simmons, my publisher, referred me to Jackie Meyer. She is in New York and works for all the big presses in the thick of the publishing world. She designed four covers for me and I picked the one that best represented the story. She put this cover on her web page along with covers she did at the time for James Patterson, Bill Gates, and Rosie O’Donnell. I was thrilled. Please look at her site, www.meyernewyork.com. She is incredible.

Q: Can you tell us something about your book that would make me run out and buy it?

It’s like splashing painting on a canvas. It moves very fast and colors and characters fly at you. It won the SD book awards in the action/suspense
      category.

Q: Are there any messages in this book that you want the reader to know about?

One message that is that art is personal and connects us to our past.

Q: What was your most favorite chapter to write and why?

Angelo was the easiest character to write. The second chapter introduces him and his studio on Fisherman’s Wharf in Monterey. I know that place very well and it was fun to invent his studio and use the wharf to show his flamboyant, creative nature and hint at the trouble he is about to land in. I had a great deal of fun with his arrogance and developing his relationship to the heroine, Mai
      Ling.

Q: Why did you feel you had to write this book?

I studied literature in college and got a Master’s degree in English. Then I got a second Master’s studying language disorders. In my job I worked with people who had significant language difficulties and I had to write a lot of reports and business related projects. When I retired, I wanted to get back to being creative with language. I enrolled in a How to Write a Mystery Novel class at UCSD. In that class, I started to write a traditional detective mystery but it didn’t allow me to develop characters with unique personalities so I kept to the mystery genre but used art and artists to explore the opposite attitudes of valuing art because of a respect for beauty and valuing art for the money it will bring. In other words, beauty versus greed.

Q: Now, some fun questions – What deep dark secret would you like to share with us?

I have a lot of scenes on the cutting room floor, or in the computer sense, in the Trash Bin. It took me a long time with a lot of help to learn to craft a scene.

Q: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

I’d like to see the empty spaces of Tibet. California is very crowded. I’d like to explore a nomadic life.

Q: Are you a morning person or a night person?

I do Chinese brush painting. I have to paint in the bright daylight to see what I’m doing but I write more creatively at night.

Q: Are there any members in your family who also like to write?

My grandfather was a journalist and a novelist. Both my grandmother and mother wrote poetry and painted.

Q: As a child, were you a dreamer?

Absolutely. I wanted to be a dancer.

Q: Last but not least, the magic genie has granted you one wish. What would that be?

Since the Dalai Lama just visited San Diego, I’d wish that his vision of us treating all life with compassion would become a reality.

Q: Thank you so much for this interview! Do you have any final words?

I think we should all look for beauty everyday. And a story.
